<image:title>Sketchbook - Diatom Drawings & Research Printed on Glass</image:title>
<image:caption>Taken from my sketchbook, these pages of my diatom drawings and research are a limited edition printed on glass. The perfect material for diatoms are glass lace or silica architecture housing plankton. This series captures the deep dive of building my complex sculpture, Flourish made for Invisible World of Water exhibit at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Nov 13, 2021 - May 1, 2022. The sculpture includes 21 different diatom species which had to be scientifically accurate for the exhibit at our nation’s first Natural History Museum. I had the top diatomist in the world, Dr. Marina Potapova, Curator of the Herbarium (Diatom) Collection at The Academy as my 911 Diatom Lifeline Call. TRUTH. Dr. Potapova curates the 2nd largest diatom collection in the world started by Dr. Ruth Patrick. It was an honor to work with her again. She brought detailed perspective from every angle so I could sculpt in clay creating homages to each diatom with integrity. The diatoms became like blossoming petals referencing the sacred geometry symbol, The Flower of Life work for Flourish. Diatoms photosynthesize over a quarter of the planet’s oxygen and live in fresh and salt water, even moisture in the soil. They are considered the Lungs of the Planet which we must honor and protect like the crown jewels that they are. Our lives and all life on Earth depend on it as we are intrinsically linked. Email to inquire about purchasing the 5”sq. ($75) or 7.2” × 9.6” ($150) glass prints with foam board, screw & metal plate stand for 5”sq. I have posted what is presently available but can have more printed in various sizes from this series for custom orders.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sketchbook - Diatom Discotella, Colonies & Dr. Ruth Patrick Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>On a visit to the Herbarium Collection, Dr. Marina Potapova shared a gem and one of the tiniest of the one-cell (microscopic) diatoms: discotella. She had me with disco lol but seriously this jewel became one of the 3 petit stemmed diatoms in a radiating crown encircling Flourish. This page includes notes in the lower left corner of Ruth Patrick’s extraordinary pioneering work which established the field of Water Ecology. On the right are colonies or networks of diatoms fusing together. These microscopic wonders understand the value of interdependence and mutual support. They are not self-propelled so they work together as a unit to navigate into nutrient rich waters. They alone provide over a quarter of Earth’s oxygen although they are only 1 cell. Imagine what we can achieve together for reciprocal sustainability. 5” sq. glass prints on foam board, screw for wall install & metal stand for table, $75, sustainably packaged.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Understanding what she can about each life form, is Hagan’s way of “downloading”. In her experience, the knowledge moves through her, informing the ceramic and creative process to deliver its message. These pages star dinoflagellates which are one-cell, meaning only seen in a microscope. Naked to the human eye yet part of the primary producers supporting the entire planet from the sunlit layer of the ocean. They photosynthesize with the diatoms and fellow micro primary producers to create over 50% of Earth’s oxygen, every other breath we breathe. Thank you, primary producers. Thank you, ocean.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Argonaut Argo</image:title>
<image:caption>hand-built ceramic, sterling & wood base, 5.75” x 5.25” x 2.5” Created for invitational International Cephalopod Exhibit: I Love You More & Science Conference in Crete, Greece. This conference brought together cephalopod organizations for the first time in response to critical climate change effecting the welfare of octopus, cuttlefish and squid. This rarely seen octupus lives in the open ocean or pelagic zone. They contain chromatophores, enabling them to change color from reflective silver to dark maroon. The Argonaut larvae are color-equipped and change color at birth. Only the female has an exquisite one-chambered shell which she makes by secreting calcium calcite from two of her technically savvy arms that look like sails. Protecting her and her eggs, the shell also acts as a buoyancy device. She can regulate the air to float at the surface or sink below in the pelagic zone habitat. They can connect to form chains of 20-30 floating on their sides in the open ocean. The rise in human induced CO2 however, dissolves the security of her shell endangering the already rare little cephalopod.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Invisibles. La Víe Cachée des Microbes, June 27, 2024 - extended though Sept 18, 2026, Musée de la Main UNIL-CHUV, Lausanne, Switzerland. This exhibit and art takes a deep dive but in this case, into the gut exploring work inspired by microbiomes. Kathy High invited me to collaborate by embodying her study of microbiomes shared within each of the 3 households into the ceramic with the Family Bio-Crests. A big thanks to Kathy High and her project on shared micro-ecologies among family members. She created it in collaboration with Dr William de Paolo, Center for Center for Microbiome Sciences & Therapeutics (CMIST), University of Washington, Seattle.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another deep dive and magnification of a different essential environment and ecosystem: our gut! An ongoing project by Kathy High about shared micro-ecologies among family members. Pleased to transform Kathy’s 3 household crests into ceramic sculptures. The essential microscopic bacteria comes to life moving across the 13th c family crest designs. It was created in collaboration with Dr William dePaolo, Center for Center for Microbiome Sciences and Therapeutics (CMiST), University of Washington, Seattle. “Family BioCrests” is an art project researching the micro-organisms that inhabit our gut. This project asks whether family members share similar gut microbes because they share a living space – thus possibly giving families a particular gut microbe profile. Fecal samples were taken from families, including partners/spouses, children, parents, pets, and cultured and analyzed at a science laboratory. Similarities between each individual’s bacterial/fungal profiles determined the signature crest of each family.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Alternative Healing Project was created, curated and coordinated by Laura Hinds and Hindsight Consulting Group in 2018 for the Community Health Workers Peer Project at Drexel University Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice. The 2 weeks of creative healing follows the rigorous months of certification for young men of color living in violence. I am honored to host the extraordinary young men in my ceramic studio each year. The weeks of well being also include yoga classes, visiting the gym, the barber, a hot glass studio, drumming and completing their personal digital stories. The ceramic program includes creating custom works in clay and wraps with a group critique of their works in clay and experience. The ceramic pieces are exhibited at the final celebration with the screening of their digital stories for a powerful and inspiring closure and new beginning for everyone. With necessary funding, the brilliant program continues each year and I am grateful.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“What does Light talk about? I asked a plant that once. It said, ‘I am not sure, but it makes me grow’" – Thomas Aquinas, 1225 – 1274 Oak trees know. Their roots graft into one flesh so they may share mutual sustenance, benefiting the community as a whole. When one tree is in need, the healthy ones direct their energy in support. This goes macro with fungi, the underpins of the terrestrial realm. Their fiber optic-like mycelium likening a high speed internet connects life in the subterranean. Our planet’s pioneers started in the sea with micro-marine organisms forming the basis of life on Earth. They connect in exquisite mutually beneficial systems or colonies in all forms of water. These one-cell photosynthesizing gems, our primary producers in the ocean alone provide over 50% of the oxygen for the planet. Rich diversity and reciprocal sharing power thriving communities and environments. This light-giving flow has enabled life to thrive for eons. Inherent potential realized moves everything, even light itself. It certainly moves me. My work is a response to this light. The interdependent forms and projects grow in a continuous heliotropic adventure raising wonder, awareness, inclusivity and positive action.</image:caption>
