Translating Science with Art, Building Trust
Thank you, Pedro Rodriguez for hosting us on your Neglected Stories podcast. This interview was aired Dec 6, 2025.
We believe the most important stories are often the ones told in unexpected spaces.
This interview, that space is the intersection of science, art and public trust. At Penn’s Institute of Translational Medicine and Therapeutics - ITMAT - researchers are pushing life-saving research forward. But they are asking a radical question: How do we make medical science understandable, relatable and accountable to people it is meant to serve?
Through ITMAT’s Artist-in-Residence program, ceramicist Marguerita Hagan works alongside scientists, using storytelling, clay and the metaphor of the “Shield” to help young researchers rethink how they communicate with communities. She’s joined Dr. Carsten Skarke, physician-scientist who created the program to break down the barriers between labs and real life.
This is a conversation about trust, storytelling and why science needs art more than ever.

Championing visual voice for the science research uplifting and connecting community through this innovative program.
The mission of this residency created by Dr. Carsten Skarke is to create ways of engaging art to expand science communication. ITMAT embeds the Artist-in-Residency/AIR into the Translational Research Immersion Program (TRIP), an existing pathway program, exposing undergraduate students to the Clinical Translational Sciences (CTS), beginning with a 10-week mentored summer research experience. The artist shadows the programming, science research and visits labs to integrate and expand the science. This enables the artist to witness the evolution of research projects by immersing themselves in the human experience unfolding among the TRIP participants.
Thank you for following 2024-2025 and the next year…
I will be sharing the ITMAT AIR summer programming highlighting the undergraduate interns research in a public event in Philadlephia during July. The AIR culminates in an art exhibit of research and focus of artist and scientists to be announced Spring 2025.

Family Bio-Crests: Collaboration with sci-artist, Kathy High
Another deep dive and magnification of a different essential environment and ecosystem: our gut.
An ongoing project by Kathy High about shared micro-ecologies among family members. Pleased to transform Kathy’s 3 household crests into ceramic sculptures. The essential microscopic bacteria comes to life moving across the 13th c family crest designs.
It was created in collaboration with Dr William dePaolo, Center for Center for Microbiome Sciences and Therapeutics (CMiST), University of Washington, Seattle.
“Family BioCrests” is an art project researching the micro-organisms that inhabit our gut. This project asks whether family members share similar gut microbes because they share a living space – thus possibly giving families a particular gut microbe profile. Fecal samples were taken from families, including partners/spouses, children, parents, pets, and cultured and analyzed at a science laboratory. Similarities between each individual’s bacterial/fungal profiles determined the signature crest of each family.

Where Art & Science Meet
UPenn Institute for Translational Medicine & Therapeutics - Art-Science Residency
The presentation by the Penn TRIP undergraduate interns at the ICA July 24, 2025, 5-7pm was stellar. They shared their science & passion through their ceramic art. The integration of art into their science shines light on the research, healing and community inspiration through their Shields.
Experience how these clay shields act as conversation starters, breaking down scientific jargon and making complex ideas more relatable. See how art enhances scientific communication, providing a new lens through which to view research.
This special program illuminates science & art, fostering a deeper connection between researchers and the community. The ITMAT Translational Research Immersion Program (TRIP) provides a 10-week summer mentored research experience to undergraduates at participating institutions. Students and their mentors had an opportunity to create ceramic Shields giving visual voice to their research and serve as a reflection of their identity as a human and their role within their communities. This process will be guided by the ITMAT Artist in Residence, Marguerita Hagan and Dr. Carsten Skarke, ITMAT Artist in Residence Program Founder.
Science communication through artwork is an opportunity for researchers to engage authentically, efficiently, and eloquently with community stakeholders. The artwork takes on the form of a Shield, a concept frequently used by the artist to convey protection. Shields also honor lineage like a family crest, where in the context of TRIP, lineage could be understood as the culmination of research, personal, and community experience in the crest as the art piece to catalyze science community engagement. During the presentation, the students share with the audience their research and sculpture process, and how both have been influenced by their personal experience as well as their community ties. This environment provides stakeholders an opportunity to participate in meaningful dialogue around scientific research and the impact on communities.
The ceramic art and science will culminate in an installation sharing Hagan’s 2-year tenure as AiR including shields made by university interns and science mentors 2024-25 & 2025-26. A documentary following this year’s Shield process is in progress.
Oct 13 & 14, 2025 Penn hosts the International ITMAT Symposium with institutions from around the world. Hagan, Dr. Carsten Skarke, scientists and interns will present a poster session.
An extended exhibition is in the works to be announced.

5 Into 1: 25th Anniversary Exhibit & Opening Reception
This summer, Moore partners with Philadelphia Sculptors to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their annual 5 Into 1 presentation—a show that introduces the public to recent graduates of five area art schools including Moore, PAFA, Tyler, UArts, and UPenn.
Join us in The Galleries for the opening reception on Friday, June 13 from 5–7 PM
I am honored to have represented PAFA in 2010 when I earned my MFA in sculpture and to participate in this milestone exhibition, summer 2025. Thank you to Leslie Kaufman for her devoted years of shining light on sculpture in Philadelphia and her collaborative curation with Gabrielle Lavin Suzenski, Exhibition Director of the Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design. Special thanks to Katie Dillon Low for her attentive care installing my ceramic sculpture.
This iteration exhibit recognizes this monumental occasion with an exhibition in three parts: the first of which is Moore's Biennial Alumni Invitational that centers on work by six artists who originally participated in 5 Into 1 at the time of their graduation. The second is a curated presentation of work by artists who 1) contributed sculptural work to the show over the years, 2) received either a BFA or MFA from any of the above-named schools, and 3) are currently exploring work-in-the-round in their contemporary studio practice. The third component is the final occurrence of the exhibition as it has existed historically to this day, representing all 5 schools for the last time. This moment allows space to reflect on the city's legacy as a thriving center of art/design higher education and gives Philadelphia Sculptors an opportunity to reimagine the future of its landscape.

In 2025, we are excited to present the 19th anniversary of this beloved exhibition. Among almost 400 small artworks displayed in 4-inch cubes, you will find big ideas, individuality, and material awareness. A few years ago, we invited artists outside the ceramic world to participate to celebrate that this truly is an exhibition for everyone. Most works are examples of small ceramic artworks ranging from tiny mugs to intricate sculptures. Artists in Small Favors range from the most established ceramic artists to young artists new to the field. Small Favors engages artists' creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a small scale. Some artists' work is similar to what they usually do but at a reduced scale. Others use it to break away from what they create in their daily studio practice. There is an open call each year for juried work and a group of invited artists who participate. This year, we have artworks from Japan, China, Budapest, and other places around the United States.
This range of artists allows us to present works in a broad price range, from $35 to $3,500. We hope this encourages people to become collectors and established collectors who have limited space.

At the Edge of Light and Darkness - The personal journey is an essential aspect of human existence, serving as a means of self-discovery and growth. Joseph Campbell, the renowned mythologist, introduced the concept of "the hero's journey," which identifies a universal narrative structure that transcends cultural boundaries. In this archetypal narrative, a hero embarks on an adventure, faces challenges and trials, ultimately undergoing transformation and returning home with newfound wisdom and insight. This framework mirrors the significance of personal journeys in our lives, as we too embark on our individual quests for meaning, purpose, and self-realization.
When embarking on our personal journeys, we navigate the intricate landscapes of our own psyches, confronting our inner dragons, and forging paths through unchartered territories. Just as the hero's journey is marked by pivotal moments of growth and self-discovery, our personal journeys are defined by experiences that challenge us to evolve, learn, and ultimately become the heroes of our own stories. These journeys allow us to connect with our innermost aspirations and values, shedding light on the depths of our character and the limitless potential within. In essence, the personal journey illuminates the transformative power of self-exploration, emphasizing that the quest for self-knowledge is a timeless and universal pursuit that unites humanity across cultures and generations.”

Primary Producerware, Tableware: Magnifies the ancient basis of our ecosystem sustaining all life
Science:
The ocean's mighty microscopic marine organisms help photosynthesize over 50% of earth's oxygen alone, providing every other breath we breathe. Diatoms alone produce over 25% of our planet's oxygen from salt and fresh water to moisture in the soil. These primary producers are some of the earliest life on earth. Drawings include the marine micro organisms to glass sea sponges, anemones, coral and inspirations from the sea.
Diatom interdependence:
Being a ceramicist offers an intimate connection for the brick of my kiln is made from the remains of diatoms over millions of years old gathered from the ocean floor as diatomaceous earth. The silica structure of the diatom is the same material in my glazes and clay body particulates. This single-cell organism not only generously provides oxygen for our planet, it makes this ceramicist's artistic breath and process possible.

Every Woman Biennial 2024
Lamella Love, Fungi Shield and I are excited to be in Every Woman Biennial 2024:
I Will Always Love You
Lamella Love, Fungi Shield, Wildlife Series: ceramic, 6.25” x 6.5” x 3.25”, 2023
Largest female/identifying as female/non-binary festival/ exhibit founded by C. Finely with Molly Caldwell, Exec Director & Producer/Co-Curator; Eddy Segal, Artistic Director/Co-Curator and Jerelyn Huber, Gallery Production Manager/Co-Curator
Lamella Love was inspired by fungi lamella/gill engineering of the Chocolate Milky, Lactarius lignyotus. This resourceful fungi exudes latex droplets as a defense mechanism to ward off predators. Sometimes a girl has to create a shield to protect what she loves. This mycorrhizal fungi is an example of one of the earliest alliances on planet Earth. 90% of all plants rely on mycorrhizal relationships, a partnership of fungi with different plant species. They collaborate yet remain recognizable as themselves. The plants can have many different fungi/mycelium (fiber optic-like roots) connectors. 500 million years ago it was mycorrhizal fungi that enabled algae to transplant from sea to land supporting our first terrestrial plants.
I will always love you, regardless of species.
It’s clearly time that we got the memo on mutualism, the indelible interdependence between diverse species. We are in this together.
Meoto Yunomi Inviational
So pleased to contribute 2 works: Diatom Yunomi and Yin Yang Yunomi for parallel exhibits at No. 5 Butchie Alley and Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Philadelphia.
JOIN US @ No 5 Butchie Alley!
CLOSING RECEPTION: SAT FEB 3, 6-9pm
A “yunomi” is a handle-less Japanese teacup used for daily tea drinking. The tradition of making Yunomi has evolved since its conception in the 16th century and contemporary artists have expanded on the variety of styles and shapes, departing from the traditional footed, cylindrical style.
Artist/Curator Terri Saulin sent out invitations to a select group of artists during Pride 2023 to honor our LGBTQA+ family/friends. Using “Meoto Yunomi '' as a vehicle to challenge heteronormative power dynamics, artists were asked to create two cups that absolutely have to be together…. or individual.
I created interdependent sculptural sips intended as One while non-binary individuals.

In The Umbra
Chimaera Gallery owned & directed by Angela McQuillan is Philadelphia’s newest gallery. Visit the Artists and their work represented. Explore the Chimaera Shop for small sculpture, drawings, prints and objets d’art.
Chimaera Gallery presents:
The Umbra is the innermost and darkest part of the shadow created by a solar eclipse. If you are standing within the umbra, you will experience a temperature drop and find yourself in darkness while you witness a total solar eclipse. This phenomenon is only visible from a very small area on the earth’s surface, offering an extreme perspective from the path of totality.
As the moon obscures the sun, evoking a rare moment of darkness, the human eye contracts in response to the reduced light, amplifying the ability to see the celestial beauty for a brief moment in time. In this correlation, we find a reminder of the infinite wonders of the universe and the breathtaking ways in which our senses connect us to the cosmos. Each person perceives this experience differently, depending on where they are standing.
"In The Umbra" features artists working from unique perspectives, exploring the allure of distant galaxies in outer space and contemplating the infinite possibilities that lie beyond the boundaries of planet Earth.

Fri Oct 6, 6 - 8:30pm
Agenda:
6:00-7:00: Art and Cocktails - Check out "In the Umbra", a group exhibition curated by Neferteri Strickland.
7:00 - 8:00: Community Conversation
Please consider making a donation to this event. 100% of proceeds will be split between HopePHL, The Arts League and The Philadelphia Union Foundation.
Light refreshments will be served.
About the inspiring program:
Have you ever heard the triplet: Time, Talent, and Treasure?
Did you know the original saying was "Time, Talents, Treasure and Physical Strength"?
"Time, talent, treasure and physical strength, which, if applied to the promotion of social improvement, the advancement of science and the furtherance of education, would convert in a very short period the whole earth into a paradise."
Successful non-profits understand the power of shared responsibility in philanthropy. Board members use this approach to align their mission and vision. Join us in bringing passionate individuals together to make a meaningful impact on our community.
This community conversation will begin with purpose, mission, and vision, then we'll learn about each participant's goals. As a board member, annual and long-term planning, recruitment of new board members, and financial goals are often at the top of our agendas, and we are never able to brainstorm new ways to connect with our extended community.
During this 60-minute conversation we'll hear about the personal perspective of non-profit board members from non-profit organizations that serve our city. We want to discuss pain-points and ways to collaborate to lessen the burden and have a broader reach. Whether the need for private support is measured in the thousands or in the hundreds, we all have an important contribution to make.

Magnificare
MAGNIFICARE
Marguerita Hagan solo exhibit curated by Robert Sparrow Jones, Curator & Senior Gallery Manager
9/22/23 - 2/22/24, Gallery Hours 10 am - 6 pm
Reception: 11/2/23, 4-6 pm, Artist talk in gallery joined by Enviro-Eco-Art sharing highlighting student projects followed by reception.
241 HUB-Robeson Center, University Park, PA 16802
Origin: magnify, Late Middle English, ‘show honor to’ and ‘make greater’ and from Latin magnificare, based on magnus, ‘great’. Magnify dates from the mid 17th c.
Magnificare sheds light on a multiplex of senses and dimensions from the eye, mind and heart to sustainable actions. Each series in the exhibition honors and celebrates mutually thriving communities and environments. Hagan’s play with scale makes physically visible the micro jewels of the ocean and her tributaries. In a cohesive and diverse body of ceramics, the works illuminate interdependence and engagement while magnifying our awareness, reciprocal responsibility, and protection of each other and our planet.
Greatly appreciate the stellar support & collaboration with Robert S. Jones, Sarah Kipp, Exhibition Director & HUB-Robeson Galleries Team on the brilliant curation and installation. Looking forward to the Eco-Enviro-Art Panel with Students & University Community Nov 2, 2023.
No Synthetic Colors
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
Walter & Leonore Annenberg Gallery, Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building, 2nd floor
July 20, 2023–April 7, 2024
Pafa members and alumni join us for an artist’s talk in the gallery
March 21, 5:30 - 7:00 pm.
Talks will being with Eileen Neff, curator of the faculty exhibit running parallel with No Synthetic Colors. I will be sharing the visual voice of my sculptures in the exhibit along with Jennifer Baker and Joshua Schaefer.
Thrilled to have 3 works in this exhibit curated by Hallie Ringle, the Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania.
The works in this year's PAFA Alumni exhibition resist easy categorization. In "No Synthetic Colors" the themes are as varied as the objects, from ecological concerns to technology.Instead, the pieces are united by a commitment to rigor and innovative thinking, the same qualities that define PAFA's program. From a pea, to a sock puppet, to a scroll, the works are sharp. Some works are witty, some touch upon poignant narratives, while others deliberately embrace ambiguity. Collectively, these objects form a clear picture of the critical work that happens here at PAFA, which, in turn, helps to shape the state of contemporary art.
Featured Artists: Jennifer Baker, Alana Bograd, Gary Bolton, Cynthia Goodman Brantley, Kate Brockman, Rosemarie Chiarlone, Abel Dolby, Emily Elliott, Emily E. Erb, Donna Festa, Richard Gabriele, Bill Garrity, Júlia Godoy, Madeline Good, Yikui (Coy) Gu, Marguerita Hagan, Colleen Hammond, A.D. Herzel, Morgan Hobbs, Abby H. King, Sarah Lesnikoski, Nate Levine, MaryKate Maher, Lolo Katz Nosanchuk, Joshua Schaefer, Ilene Spiewak, Barbara Straussberg, Brian Van Camerik, Sophie Cooper White, Summer Yates.

WACK! Exhibit at HotBed
When the world gets too weird to comprehend, art and design of the moment reflect that. Weirdness is becoming the new norm. In light of forced detachment from pre-COVID lives, HOT BED has gathered the latest perspectives on the new and unfamiliar. WACK! invites artists and viewers to lean into the absurdity of our present moment. The 24 artists in this exhibition fearlessly embrace how “wack” life in Philly has become and show us what wonderful things this weirdness creates.
You will find one of my new Fungi Shields, Champagne & Crinoline along with 3 Petit Rongorongos, 2 Pit-Fired and 1 Red. This is a fantastic show. Email to visit the exhibit with me.
Click Button to learn more about it on HotBed’s Current Exhibitions where you can visit the Virtual Show and Catalog or Book an Appointment.
Check out this colorful article by Artblog’s Sharon Garbe. Grateful for the private preview, light on my work, WACK! exhibit and HotBed.

Woodmere Annual: 81st Juried Exhibit
I am honored to have my diatom sculpture, Flourish, part of the 81st Annual. This year’s juror, Doug Bucci, invited artists to submit work that explores novel and infinite ideas and methods of connection.
Fifty-four artists working in sculpture, painting, photography, jewelry, and printmaking address such varied subjects as climate change, materialism, ancestry, and biology, revealing connections on a microscopic to universal level. The spectrum of ideas and processes, including innovative uses of electroforming, computer-aided design, and 3-D printing, illustrates the intellectual rigor and creative diversity that characterize our city’s art community. Small Favors
Pleased to be invited to this annual exhibit curated by Jennifer Zwilling at The Clay Studio. to visit and shop the online exhibit. I created Veiled Lady, Petit Fungi Shield for the exhibit as well as my two Petit Pit-Fired Rongorongos: Flying Fish and Rongorongo Dance.
Small Favors 2023 is the 17th anniversary of this beloved exhibition. It will be on view at The Clay Studio’s new building for the first time with their first anniversary at 1425 N American Street in April. Among almost 400 small artworks displayed in 4-inch cubes you will find big ideas, individuality, and material awareness. To celebrate that this truly is an exhibition for everyone, a few years ago, Small Favors included artists working in different materials. This year we are excited to have art in wood, metal, glass, fiber, paper, and paint. The majority of the works are examples of small ceramic artworks that range from tiny mugs to intricate sculptures.
Artists represented in Small Favors range from the most established ceramic artists in the field, to young artists new to the field. Small Favors engages artists' creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a very small scale. There is an open call each year for juried work, as well as a group of invited artists who participate. This year hosts artworks from Japan, China and Budapest in addition to those from around the United States.
Small Favors offers work in a broad price range from $35 to $3,500 and encourages people to become collectors while offering efficiency of space for established collectors. Click link below to visit and shop the online exhibit.
